Ankle braces immobilize or limit the amount of movement the ankle joint has to protect or encourage healing of the bones, tendons or ligaments.
Ankle & Foot braces can be divided into braces that cover the ankle and braces that cover the ankle and the foot:
Orthoworx Orthotics & Prosthetics has in depth knowledge of ankle braces as well as clinical conditions and will ensure that you are paired with the correct ankle brace for your condition.
The principles behind ankle braces are to support, align and protect the ankle by keeping it in the correct position thereby taking the stress of the ligaments and muscles. – In the case of a fracture an ankle brace is used to immobilize the ankle and foot to enable the bones to join in the correct manner again.
Most ankle braces are modern, off- the shelf braces that are available in a wide range of sizes to ensure optimal fit and function. In some cases the Orthotist will prescribe a custom made brace should the condition or anatomy requires it to ensure a successful outcome.
A foot drop is the inability to elevate the ankle and toes from a “toe down” position to a “toe up” position, or the inability to bring the ankle up to a neutral position.
An ankle sprain is the injury that occurs when your foot “rolls,” or turns in on itself. In this injury, the ligaments that hold the ankle and foot bones in place are stretched and weakened.
An “ankle fracture” (broken ankle) occurs when one or both (fibula or tibia) of the bones making up the top part of the ankle joint are broken. Most commonly this is the bone on the outside of the ankle (the fibula).
